In 2007, I stepped into a swimming pool for the first time, driven by a desperate need for therapy to combat a life-threatening situation caused by severe spine compression. At that moment, I was filled with uncertainty—would I even be able to swim? The fear of judgment held me back; what would others think if I asked for swimming lessons beyond my therapeutic needs? However, my deep love for water and swimming ultimately propelled me to overcome those hesitations. I approached a coach, only to find that he lacked the experience to train someone with my disability.

Undeterred, I embarked on the journey of learning to swim on my own, using a floater as my companion. It took me three to four months of determination and self-discovery to finally grasp the art of swimming. This personal triumph ignited a spark within me—a desire to create change.

Inspired by my experience, I took the initiative to form the Paralympic Swimming Association of Tamil Nadu alongside a group of like-minded individuals. Together, we submitted a request to the government for the construction of a hydrotherapy pool equipped with all-inclusive features, aiming to set an example for others. To our delight, the government accepted our proposal and constructed the pool.

The culmination of our efforts came when we organized a swimming camp through our YWTC Trust at this accessible facility. We also arranged sessions with sports sciences experts from Sportage, who provided guidance and motivation for our swimmers. The joy I felt witnessing beginners flourish under the expert guidance of our coach, Mr. Vijaya Kumar was indescribable. In just one day, I observed remarkable progress in their skills. The difference was evident: these individuals now had access to a coach experienced in training persons with disabilities, an accessible pool designed for their needs, sport science experts guidance and most importantly, they had role models who inspired them. They understood that they could swim.

This transformation was nothing short of magical. It reinforced my belief that with the right support and encouragement, anything is possible. Our journey reflects resilience, community spirit, and the profound impact of inclusivity in sports for individuals with disabilities.

What can we learn from this journey about overcoming challenges and believing in ourselves?
